Oulu

Oulu, Finland

Oulu is a gateway to urban culture as well as the unique nature of the North. The city of Oulu, located on the shores of the Bay of Bothnia, in the Oulunjoki river delta, is the largest city in Northern Finland. This is where a modern business and tourism city meets northern peace and exoticism.

When strolling around the city, you will soon realise how central a part nature and outdoor activities play in Oulu. You can find beautiful parks all around, in the wintertime, ski tracks are well maintained, and beautiful flowers bloom everywhere in the summer.

Also, the archipelago nature of the Bothnian Bay is just around the corner. A ferry runs between the city of Oulu and the sand dune island of Hailuoto in the summertime, and in the winter you can experience crossing the ice road to the island across the frozen sea.

Oulu, also known as a city of technology, is Finland's fifth largest city, founded in 1605 by King Charles IX of Sweden. By the 19th century, Oulu had become one of the leading exporters of tar. The basis for the enthusiastic and entrepreneur-friendly atmosphere of Oulu was already being laid back then.

Today, energetic, youthful Oulu is home to Finland's second largest university, and the city is full of lively cultural events. The festivals and events of the capital of northern Scandinavia wait for their visitors!
