The history of Turku Castle stretches right back to the 1280’s. The Castle has played many roles, from defensive bastion, luxurious palace and the seat of government, to a prison, warehouse and a barracks. Today the Castle is a hugely significant historical monument and a must-see tourist destination. The halls and the chambers of the main castle have witnessed the twists, turns and dramatic events of history, from the misfortunes of incarcerated souls to visits from kings and the elegance of court life. Turku Castle’s most eventful period was the 16th Century, when the House of Vasa held the reins of power. The brand new comprehensive exhibition introduces Turku Castle’s history from its earliest beginnings to the present day. The periodic furniture and costumes in the elegant rooms of the Bailey are treasures of the museum collection. In the Knights Hall children can dress in the costume of a knight or the garments of a castle maiden and be transported to Medieval court life. The children’s castle includes the Castle Workshop, Mini-court and the Castle-Elf ’s treasure chamber. The castle also arranges for children the fun and exciting Little Knight’s Tours. During summer there are daily tours, whilst at other times special arrangements can be made for groups. At the Fatabur Museum Shop you can buy gifts, souvenirs and accessories for the costumes of your adventurous little knight or maiden. Information to feed the imagination can be acquired from the shop’s range of books. In Duke John’s Cellar enjoy a coffee or a delicious lunch as a break from your museum visit.
