The shuttle bus departs from your hotel and heads to Posio’s virgin forest area, 160 km from Rovaniemi. The place is magical and looks like a fairyland. The snow has started to accumulate in mid-November, producing snow trails thicker than 1-meter. Snow falls on the trees of the forest making the forest more attractive. Photos of the ice and snow can be taken everywhere.

Professional guides will escort you to the forest and provide professional snowshoes for your comfort and safety. In the middle of our hike, our guide will make a bonfire, and you will enjoy the traditional cuisine of the Arctic Circle!

THE FROZEN WATERFALLS OF KOROUOMA NATIONAL PARK:

Korouma is a beautifully rugged destination in Southern Finnish Lapland, less than a couple of hours from Rovaniemi. This long crack of bedrock, which is hundreds of millions of years old, hosts some spectacular waterfalls which freeze over the winter months offering a magical experience to those who visit.

In the winter, the small streams pouring down the cliffs become frozen waterfalls. They remain frozen until late spring. Precipitation and sub-zero temperatures determine the number and shape of frozen waterfalls. Most people are happy to just admire the frozen waterfalls, but enthusiastic ice climbers climb up the frozen waterfalls to the top, despite the intensely cold weather.

Birds
Most of the bird species in Korouoma are those that typically inhabit the forest. An official count found that there are 62 species in the area, but this does not include, for example, some of the local water birds and those species that appear in small numbers. The rarest bird of prey to nest in the area is the Northern Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo). Some have also made sightings of nests inhabited by the Rough-legged Buzzard (Buteo lagopus). The unique feature of the area is the Northern House Martin (Delichon urbica), which nests on the area's cliffs. It is also possible to see the Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) at Korouoma.

Weather in the canyon
The canyon is cold, covered with snow until late spring (April-May), but due to the thaw and the runoff from the surrounding area, it can have a lot of water too. The parking lots sometimes are not accessible in May-June after sudden melting. If you see a no entrance sign, please, don’t drive on the roads. You can easily be stuck in the mud.

How to get to Korouoma Nature Reserve
The Korouoma canyon is near Posio but can be reached easily from Rovaniemi or Kuusamo as well. It is about 1.5-2 hours away from Rovaniemi by car, and it is the suggested way of approach. Public transport is rather expensive and rare, and most importantly leaves you a couple of kilometers away from the trailhead.

Suitability: Suits well for people in high condition all around the year, requires basic hiking skills, in summer for hikers, also for families.
