Rovaniemi City Library

Rovaniemi, Finland

Rovaniemi City Library – the most famous architect Alvar Aalto’s works in Lapland.

City Library of Rovaniemi was the first building to be completed, in 1966, followed by the Lappia House, functioning as a theatre and congress hall, in 1975 and the Town Hall, finished after Aalto’s death, in 1988. Together, these three buildings form a composition enclosing a spacious plaza, highlighting the individuality and purpose of each building. The library building is given character by its lending section, crowned by a set of upper windows, while Lappia House’s exhibition space is topped by majestic arched roofs and the town hall has a high council tower, shaped like a shard of crystal.
