Forum Marinum, a National Specialist Museum for Finnish maritime and naval history standing next to Turku Castle, is a nautical experience suitable for all ages. The museum has both changing as well as permanent exhibitions, a fascinating collection of vessels and a remarkable fleet of museum ships: sailing ships the Suomen Joutsen (frigate) and the Sigyn (barque), four warships and many small steam-powered vessels such as a tug-boat and police boat. The ships only open in summer; with the Bore-ship exhibits and the Maritime Centre exhibitions open year round. In the museum children will enjoy following the path of footprints left by the ship’s dog, Axel. Axel will guide both children and adults, leading them to try a variety of maritime skills such as starting a motorboat, mooring a vessel and donning a marine’s uniform. Forum Marinum is also suitable for meetings and public events. Enjoy coffee and lunch at Café Restaurant Daphne, named after the sailboat. The restaurant can be reserved for companies, groups as well as family celebrations, and provides catering services for the Suomen Joutsen. The Museum shop sells gifts and useful items as well as books.
